Wedding season is finally over (which is a shame, as I was getting used to eating my body weight in high-end canapés and drinking champagne), and my Nan pointed out quite bluntly that “you haven’t updated your blog for a very long time”, so here it is: getting back in the habit.
The last time I posted an update, I’d had the best race of my short-lived amateur career, racing a PB and feeling on top of the world. The following week, we flew to New Zealand for a wedding and a holiday. We then had a two week break before another wedding in the Yarra Valley. And then this weekend we were in Sydney for another wedding. I think I have had more hangovers in the past 6 weeks than I have had in the whole two years since we started triathlon training. And that should explain more clearly why I haven’t been posting updates: because I’ve been too busy having non-sport related FUN.
And it’s been amazing, I’m not going to lie about it.
But now it’s back to real life, and training. And I’m not sure how I feel about that yet. I watched the Melbourne Ironman a couple of weeks ago (the race that we competed in last year which initially got us into triathlon), and it was brutal. They say that the brain can’t remember pain, but riding alongside the runners at the final stages of the race, my brain supplied me with some very vivid flashbacks…
So what’s next?
Well, I have no triathlons on the horizon, and the season is over now for us in the Southern Hemisphere. So for a good winter goal, I signed up for the Melbourne Marathon in October. I’ve never run a standalone marathon before; I’ve run the ironman marathon and the Great Ocean Road marathon which is a challenging, hilly 45km along the coastal road. So the Melbourne Marathon seemed like a great event to enter. And since I haven’t really worked on my running for over a year now, this will be a good shift in focus. Running used to be my strength, but I’d let it slip a bit, especially training for iron am where everything just went super slow….
Anyway, we’ll see…. There’s been so much going on recently that my fitness is taking a bit of a hiatus. But I think it’s good to decondition for a few weeks (by ‘decondition’ read: drink red wine and eat Mexican food). It’s also been fantastic just to unwind and reconnect with friends and family – the people that I’ve neglected so terribly over the past two years since triathlon training took over.
So now it’s onwards and upwards and time to lace up and start training for a winter marathon! It was great to have a bit of a break add give myself a break from all things sport-related and wear nice dresses and make-up and drink expensive wine (and also cheap wine) and eat things other than salad (who am I kidding I never eat salad haha).
It was good while it lasted. But the holiday is over. Let’s get back to work.
